DECEMBER 2024 FENCEPOST
APTOS, CAPITOLA & RIO DEL MAR SIR BRANCH 104 – Website https://sirinc2.org/branch104/
LUNCH DATE: 3rd TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17th AT 11:30 AM
SEASCAPE GOLF COURSE MONARCH ROOM
BIG SIR MESSAGE: RICK POWERS “THE ROSTER’S CACA-DOODLE-DOO”
Gentlemen, can you believe it is almost December? I sincerely hope everyone had a festive
Thanksgiving. I did!
The holidays are soon upon us! And so is our Branch 104 Christmas Party Luncheon on December 17th. Yes, invite your wives, girlfriends and significant others to enjoy a special lunch. Our menu choices will be Tri-tip, Grilled Salmon Salad, or Western Veggie Salad. Our program will be provided by the Cabrillo College Chorale directed by Cheryl Anderson. The holiday luncheon is also a great time to invite a friend, neighbor or interested acquaintance to come see what our “jolly band” is all about. . . Inviting a friend works! Be sure to tell your “caller” the number of guests you would like to bring and their meal choices. Conversely, if you find out at the last moment that you are unable to attend…… please call us ASAP. (We want to stay in the black.) Please welcome Tim Grolle and Orville Plum, who joined by submitting their applications . . . Good to have you guys on board-Tim and Orville. I am sure they sensed the congeniality that we exude.
It is also that time of year when we conduct “The Dave Selner Memorial Fund Drive” Your contributions are the only thing which is keeping the Branch in the black. As you know, we recently have been having some unexpected shortfalls where we have had to cover the cost of ordered, but uneaten lunches, etc. Your heartfelt donations to the Selner Memorial fund are one of the prime reasons we do NOT have dues or membership fees. Dave loved our SIR Branch and gave unselfishly of himself to SIR over the decades. I know he will be smiling in appreciation of any contributions you can make.
See you on December 17th.
Stay warm, Burr, buddy, it’s cold outside…
Rick

GARY OING’S SHARING GOOD THOUGHTS WEBSITE (SGT):
For most of us, this is the month to “give gifts” to friends and family members. I have several suggestions for how to be generous when doing this and this message has a couple of “good thoughts” on how to do it.
As we approach the holidays of “gift giving”, I wanted to think why being a “generous giver” does not require that you buy things. My definition of generosity is to “give with kindness” from what you have (time, talent, and treasure) and to not expect anything in return.
The first gift category I recommend is “time”. Here is a short article that a friend of mine sent to me that shows one monetary value for time and emphasizes its importance. Read the last part of page 2 on this link!
I encourage you to check it out — https://gk.eoing.com/good_thoughts/pdf_money_time_11n2024_2pg.pdf
If you currently give time as a caring person or are a “receiver of care giving”, be especially thankful for the generous gift of the giver’s time that helps you.
This link has some great quotes on how being generous is a profound act of kindness — https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/turning-straw-gold/201408/20-quotations-generosity-profound-act-kindness
The category of “talent” is also a valuable gift. This link gives examples of some types of gifts and talents for your personal and professional lives — https://www.cultivitae.com/examples-of-gifts-and-talents/
For me, if you explain how technical gadgets work or show how to fix things that aren’t working to someone who is challenged, YOU are a “generous giver” of talent.
And lastly there is the category of “treasure”. This is the time of the year when many charitable institutions increase their requests for money. Many of you probably already have your favorite charity and make an end-of-year extra donation.
If you would like to know which US charities get the highest efficiency ratings, check out this website — https://www.charitynavigator.org/
As a reminder, you can find the above links and much more at Gary’s SGT website. I encourage you to save the link to the SGT website and visit it throughout the month to help remember my suggested topic of “generous givers”.
The link to Gary’s “Sharing Good Thoughts” (SGT) website is — https://www.gk.eoing.com/good_thoughts
Let me know if you have found Internet content that you use for your “mental health”. If so, share those links with me and I can add them to my website.
Stay well and mentally happy by thinking good thoughts.
Gary Oing
