LUNCH DATE: 3rd TUESDAY, JUNE 18th AT 11:30 AM

SEASCAPE GOLF COURSE MONARCH ROOM

BIG SIR MESSAGE: RICK POWERS  “THE ROSTER’S CACA-DOODLE-DOO”

Gentlemen, The Solstice will soon be upon us. Happy June and soon to be summer.

We have another great speaker lined up-John Ryan. John, from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, will join us for lunch and will be speaking to us about the whales we have offshore and the ecology of these fascinating mammals. We are planning to be in the large Monarch Room to enjoy another great luncheon with a choice of Southern Friend Chicken, Grilled Salmon Salad, or Western Veggie Salad.

How does our luncheon contract with Seascape work?  It is much like going out to your favorite restaurant for a nice meal.  One comes in, sits down, and orders a meal from the menu. The meal is enjoyed, then you pay for it and leave.  Our situation at Seascape is a bit different.  The Branch books the entire restaurant! To deliver quality meals, the restaurant must place their food order ahead of time, usually a week, to ensure that all the food needed for our lunch will be delivered, prepared, and served for our enjoyment. Seascape requests that we submit our luncheon request one week ahead of the meeting.  This is why our callers phone you ahead of time to confirm your presence and meal choice. Seascape then takes this as a firm order.  The Branch is thus billed for all the lunches we preorder. (It is a firm order.) The Branch must pay for the lunches ordered whether the member attends and eats the lunch or not.  If a member does not show up, not only does it impact our finances, but it’s also a waste of food. We are beginning to see an increase in the number of members ordering lunches and then not attending the luncheon.  (Unforeseen emergencies occur, we understand this.) The problem is with some members who are ordering a lunch then changing their mind and do not attend. We need to address this problem. The total individual price we charge for the lunch covers the cost for all the lunches including those ordered for those committing to come but did not show up. If this trend continues, we’ll have to increase the amount we currently charge.

Could you please give me ideas how you think we can solve this waste of food and the financial burden to Branch.

What sayeth thou?

Reminder: If you have a friend or better half wishing to attend to hear the speaker after lunch, please let us know a week ahead so we can have chairs available.  Thank you for your cooperation.

LUNCHEON PROGRAM:

Our speaker will be John Ryan from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. His presentation will be “Hearing the lives of Earth’s largest animals”.

In the sonic realm of the sea, magnificent and massive animals use sound to communicate, socialize, forage, navigate, reproduce, and transmit culture.  In this brief exploration, we’ll take a deep dive into the ocean’s world of sound — immersing in the powerful songs of Earth’s largest animals and exploring dimensions of their phenomenal lives that are revealed in the vibrations that sound carries.

John Ryan received the PhD degree in biological oceanography from the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography in 1998, with support from an Office of Naval Research fellowship.  He came to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship… more than a quarter century ago.  Appreciating the science~engineering collaborations inherent to MBARI, John has remained there and is now a Senior Research Specialist.  His research explores ecosystem processes that shape oceanic life, from blooms of microscopic algae to behavior of gigantic whales.

GARY OING’S SHARING GOOD THOUGHTS WEBSITE (SGT):

Sunny Skies & Shared Good Thoughts (SGT)

One of my SGT friends sent me some info about a great “good news” webpage, and it even relates to my topic of the month — “sunny skies”.  You can find funny videos, jokes, and stories on a website devoted to “good news” with the website name “sunny skyz” (which is what I am hoping for in June!).  Check it out at — https://www.sunnyskyz.com/

Here is one example of a funny joke from that website.  If you like animals, you will definitely enjoy it — https://www.sunnyskyz.com/funny-jokes/298/On-The-First-Day-God-Created-The-Dog-

June marks the official beginning of the summer season.  If you want to know more about the history of the month of June, go to the Wikipedia article at — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June

I also hope you check out the lyrics and melody to the song “Sunny Skies” performed by James Taylor in this short video — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qyi2C0Tw5c

For a daily piece of good news, I suggest you sign up to get an inspirational email message via “Pass It On” at https://www.passiton.com/inspirational-quotes .  This is operated as a non-profit company that doesn’t incorporate ads in their messages.  It was founded in 2000 and is called “The Foundation for a Better Life”.  You probably have seen some of their messages on TV or billboards.

Sunny skies can produce hot and humid weather and June is when it starts to get worse for many people. Let’s each of us plan to have an enjoyable summer.  So let me close with a link to a great recording (from 1968!) of a famous “summertime” song — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2bigf337aU

As a reminder, you can find the above links and much more at Gary’s SGT website.  I encourage you to save the link to the SGT website and visit it throughout the month to help remember my suggested topic of “sunny skies”.

The link to Gary’s “Sharing Good Thoughts” (SGT) website is — https://www.gk.eoing.com/good_thoughts

Let me know if you have found Internet content that you use for your “mental health”.  If so, share those links with me and I can add them to my website.

Stay well and mentally happy by thinking good thoughts.
