“Just for the fun of it”

LUNCH DATE: 3rd TUESDAY, SEPT 16th, AT 11:30 AM

SEASCAPE GOLF COURSE

BIG SIR MESSAGE: RICH BRANSON

Summer For Locals has arrived. We welcome it and hope we are able to get together on September 16th to enjoy each other’s company over a nice lunch and interesting speaker.

Our speaker is Dan Coughlin, a consultant for Joby Avation on the JOBY 4 passenger air taxi.

We tried some new lunch options the last couple of meetings. I did get some kind feedback for the salad only choices. However many people felt the Deli Buffet was not a good value and I agree.

Our Meal choices for September 16th are as follows;

1. Pork Loin Topped With Apple & Red Onion Cream Sauce. Served with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Fresh Sautéed Seasonal Vegetables for $34

2. Grilled Salmon Salad for $29

3. Southwest Veggie Salad for $29

Each of the above meal options includes 1 door prize ticket. You also have the option to buy more tickets for $1 each

Doors Open at 11:30am. Meeting begins at 12 noon.

Your SIR caller will be reaching out to each member this coming week to confirm you will be attending lunch and what is your meal choice on Tuesday Sept 16th or not. If you have a change of plans after you have indicated you will attend, please let your caller know immediately. Seascape may have time to cancel your order and not charge SIR Branch 104.

I recently attended our State SIR Inc. annual meeting and I was very proud to represent all of you in SIR Branch #104. SIR activities provide social, physical and mental engagement for men 50 and over.

A big part of the meeting was devoted on how to recruit younger members between the age of 50 and 70 years old. The best way we can all do this is to personally invite potential new members.

New!  SIRS is removing the words “Retired” in our membership requirements.

LUNCHEON PROGRAM Dan Couglin, Current Consultant and Former Special Projects Officer for Joby Aviation

Joby Aviation is headquartered in Santa Cruz, California with manufacturing in Marina, California, has developed a lightweight, all-electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (“eVTOL”) aircraft.  The single-pilot, four-passenger aircraft (the “S4”) has been in research & development for over fifteen years. It will serve as an affordable, quiet, and environmentally friendly, advanced transportation ‘air-taxi’— enabling passengers to avoid local traffic congestion and the associated tailpipe GHG emissions. This revolutionary tilt-rotor aircraft takes off vertically, transitions to wing-borne forward flight, and then transitions back to the VTOL configuration to land vertically upon reaching its destination. The S4 prioritizes low operating noise and is expertly designed to keep the sound of the aircraft below that of city background noise with zero tailpipe operating emissions. Joby is targeting the price of the aerial ridesharing service to be the equivalent cost of a traditional ground-based taxi once the service is deployed at scale.  Joby will own and operate the aerial ridesharing service.

Dan Coughlin will provide a company history, an overview of the aircraft and service and highlight Joby’s progress toward FAA certification and commercial service.

SIRS……by Gary Schilling

We are the walking wounded

Old gents at the end of the trail

We fought the good fight

With all of our might

And with SIR friends we just couldn’t fail

BRANCH 104 ACTIVITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

COFFEE AND CONVERSATION – SIR Joel Dedrick

The group meets every Wednesday at 10:00AM. The Coffee and Conversation group has moved their get-togethers to Sevy’s formerly Severino’s.

We don’t have a formal agenda, at least so far; we discuss politics, religion, current events, public policy, technology, and pretty much anything else that’s on our minds.  The conversations are spirited but always respectful – and I guarantee you’ll learn something new every week.

No RSVP required – just swing by if you can!

IMPROVE—SIR Al McLeod   – New Group Activity

Many of us are narrowly role bound in daily life.  Improv theater can help us discover and act on neglected aspects of ourselves, and many “players” report it adds a wider expression of self and more fun in everyday life.  We need five or six players to do this, and also a private venue.  Let me know of your interest level.  thanks.  almcleodme@gmail.com

BOCCE—SIR Brent Paine   Email: brentp1955@gmail.com  PH: (408) 355-4623

We will be playing pick-up games.  So, just come, have a good time and everyone will play!

Bocce play is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on the 1st Tuesday of the month at the Felt Street County Park. Following Bocce, optional Dutch Treat lunch with the guys at a local restaurant.

BOOK CLUB — SIR Rick Hornbeck Email: rhornbeck@sbcglobal.net  PH (831) 226-4350)

The Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, September 25th at 4:30pm at Sevy’s Bar + Kitchen (formerly Severino’s). As we have done for the past several meetings, we are continuing the “reader’s choice” option. If there is a book that you have read that you think other folks may be interested in, please let us all know about it at the meeting.

If you are interested in learning more about the Book Club, please contact SIR Rick Hornbeck. He will be glad to add you to the Book Club email distribution list to get more up-to-date information

This month we will be meeting on September 9th at 10:00 am. On the call we share ideas and usually drill down on a couple of stocks.  We share our mistakes and occasional wins. We can’t promise big gains, but we usually have some laughs.

Until we find a new lead for this group, please contact Doug Deaver at ddeaver@yahoo.com

or (831) 234-1210 for further information.

CARDS AND BOARD GAMES

Come to the Aptos Grange to join other SIRs in card, poker, cribbage, and any other games of your choice. This is a recent activity that we are pulling together that will meet from 1:00 – 4:00 on the second Wednesday of every month at the Aptos Grange on 2555 Mar Vista Dr.

Please come by to join us with the poker club and other SIRs to have some fun competitive games and good conversation.  So, bring your deck of cards, dominoes, cribbage boards or whatever game you would like to start a group to play every second Wednesday.
