Conway, Joseph

Joseph Conway In the company of those he loved the most, dad passed away on February 7, 2006 after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Enjoying his family until the very last moment, and gracing us with his well known wit until the end; he leaves behind his wife and best friend of 51 years, Peggy; two daughters, Maureen and Kathleen; two sons and best buddies, Joey and Daniel, and their wives Robin and Eileen. He was the best Grampa ever with his nine adoring grandchildren: Kathleen, Mary and Jeannie O'Rourke; Shannon, Laura, Charlie and Angeline Kelly; and the two newest babies who brought him so much joy this past year, Joseph Conway and Danny Conway. He is survived by his loving in-laws Nancy Hole and Betty and Bill Bennett. Rounding out his large and loving family are all the Cullen, Bennett and Hutton cousins as well as his Conway cousins in Ireland. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Florence Conway; beloved sister, Eileen Conway Cullen; brother-in-law, Jack Cullen; and first cousins, Jay and Lee Wormser. He also leaves behind many longtime and loyal friends who brightened his days this past year with cards, letters and phone calls. Born in S.F., September 28, 1926, Dad attended St. Cecilia's Grammar School and St. Ignatius High School. After returning from Army Service in occupied Japan he attended and graduated from the University of S.F. earning a bachelors degree and a masters degree in education. Starting as a teacher at Everett Jr. High in S.F. he rose through the ranks and retired after more than 30 years with the Jefferson Union High School District, as principal of Terra Nova High School in Pacifica. Of all things in his life, dad's family was the most important to him and the biggest source of joy. He was so proud of his Irish heritage and of being a native San Franciscan. Our favorite times were spent together at our home in Hacienda on the Russian River sitting on the porch telling stories, always with lots and lots of laughs. Friends are invited to visit at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2006 with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at SNEIDER AND SULLIVAN FUNERAL HOME, 977 So. El Camino Real in San Mateo. Bruce Tredway

September 4, 2006

Bruce Tredway
BRUCE TREDWAY November 2, 1919 - September 4, 2006 86 years, Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Earl and Ethyl Tredway, Bruce was raised with his older brother Reg until going to high school and junior college in Marysville, CA. An accomplished athlete, excelling in track and baseball, he pitched a number of no-hit games in junior college. Transferring to the University of California, Berkeley in his junior year, he became absorbed in his studies as a History major. This would become a life long passion, shared with his family. As WWII became imminent, he joined the Navy Reserves; then transferred to the Army Air Corp when war was declared: and trained as a bombardier/navigator at various facilities on the West Coast. While a cadet in eastern Washington, Bruce met Donna Blaxall on a blind date and by the end of the evening had professed his intentions to marry. Donna thought him a bit of a smart alec at the time, but Bruce proceeded to win her over and they were married in Feb 1943. He proclaimed this was the luckiest day of his life for the next 63 years. Bruce was sent to the South Pacific to join the 500th bomber squadron, 345th bomb group of the 5th Air Force located in Port Moresby, New Guinea. Arriving in December, he proceeded to fly many hazardous missions in B-25 strafers with this famous and decorated group. By December 1944, he had acquired enough points to return home to his wife and son, born on July 7th. Bruce then took advantage of his flight operations knowledge and joined Pan American Airways as a dispatcher. Two more sons were born in the next few years. He then was assigned numerous overseas assignments in a 36 year career with this flagship airline. Assigned to Hawaii, the Philippines, Fairbanks, Alaska, Belmont, California, Germany and Miami, Florida, many lifelong friends were made and kept in contact. Bruce and Donna moved back to San Carlos California in 1979 just before retirement to be close to their children who were now working in Silicon Valley. Upon retirement, Bruce joined the Green Hills country club to enjoy his passion for the game of golf. Many new friends were made and his golf game became quite good. At the same time, the WWII bomber squadron started having reunions and those friendships rekindled. His love of history has been passed down to the three sons and many stimulated conversations have taken place as a result. Bruce was particularly interested in the Civil War period, attending a Civil War discussion group meeting regularly for lunch in San Carlos. He enjoyed these meetings immensely. Bruce also was a member of the Sunnyvale Senior Sitizens Golf Club where again he enjoyed the camaraderie of golf with a wonderful group of people. Last year, Bruce and family attended his squadron's reunion in Washington, DC where the newly dedicated WWII memorial was visited. The Smithsonian, Udvar-Hazy Aviation museum, Memorials and Gettysburg were seen as well. It was a wonderful and fascinating trip for all. Bruce was a stimulating intellect, and athlete and supremely family oriented parent. His character and honestly made him much respected by his friends and acquaintances, loved by his family. We have been blessed with his presence over these many years and will celebrate in his memory. Bruce is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna Mary; brother, Reg Tredway of Kona, Hawaii; three sons, Ron Tredway of Oakdale California, Brian Tredway of San Carlos California and Larry Tredway of Pleasanton California; daughters-in-law, Crystal and Lynn Tredway; sister-in-law, Glenna, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many extended family members. Memorial service will be held at the White Oaks Chapel, 1696 El Camino Real, San Carlos, CA at 2 p.m. on September 13th, 650-591-5791. Bruce was to become a member of SIR's Branch No. 1 on September 13, 2006.

Emmet B. Hayes

November 1, 2006

Hayes, Emmet B.

EMMET B. HAYES Died peacefully on November 1, 2006, at the age of 95 from a stroke. Although born in San Francisco in 1911, he lived in San Mateo and Burlingame for most of his life. Always independent, he cared for himself until his death. A true gentleman, his life was defined by his generosity, sharp wit, successful profession, love of travel, and the many friends he made through the organizations to which he belonged. The fabric of his life was his love for his wife, Maxine Lee, whom he married in 1937, and his family. He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Ute Hayes of Belmont, and daughter, Sharon Collins of Oakland, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren, as well as his wife's sisters, Barbara Carroll of Colorado Springs and Joan Jamison of San Jose and their families. He was recently honored at a 95th birthday party attended by 25 loving relatives. Emmet graduated from Burlingame High School and later from what was then San Mateo Jr. College. Before beginning his studies at Stanford U. he worked his way around the world on the SS President Wilson at the age of 18. He later revisited almost every country in the world. While at Stanford he pledged Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, where he made life-long friends; in 1954 he became National President of the fraternity. Following his Stanford graduation in 1932, he attended Hastings College of Law. He practiced law for some 50 years in San Francisco. During World War II he was associated with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Alien Property. He also enjoyed teaching at Golden Gate Law School. After his retirement in his 70's, he devoted much time to tracing his genealogy, leaving his grateful family an autobiography. Since he had been editor of his school newspapers, as well as a "stringer" for the Oakland Tribune, his memoirs are beautifully written, interesting and witty. Emmet, "with one t," was proud of his Irish heritage and his sharing the name of Robert Emmet, Irish orator and patriot. He was a member of the State and Federal Bar Associations, California Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, the Asiya Shriners Temple, the Royal Order of Jesters, Optimist International, Sons in Retirement, Native Sons of the Golden West, Sons of the American Revolution, the San Mateo Elks Lodge, and the Burlingame Historical Society. He loved baseball and was a lifetime booster of the S.F. Seals and Giants. He supported the Boy Scouts of America and was proud of his Eagle Scout achievement. At his request, there will be no memorial. His ashes will be interred with his beloved wife, who preceded him in death in 1973, at Oak Hill Cemetery of San Jose. His immediate family will then convene for a time of remembrance to toast their beloved patriarch.
