SIRS APRIL BICYCLE ACTIVITY

(The ride was on the last Friday April 25th)

The ride was mostly on the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail along the coast.

The riders were John Ranallo, Pete Eppolito, Fred’s brother Frank Jones and Fred Jones

We left San Jose in Fred’s truck about 9:00AM. We started the ride about 10:15AM in Sand City. Because everyone had an electric bike. We decided to start the ride in Sand City outlet shopping center parking lot. We rode along the shoreline to the end of the Old Fisherman’s Wharf. The buildings were working fish dispensaries lined with commercial crab pots. We rode threw Cannery Row next to the shore. We rode to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove along the beautiful rocky coast.. We rode past LucasPoint, past Pacific Grove Golf Links and past Point Pinos Light House, built in 1855. We rode alongside of Ocean View Dr. to Pacific Grove Rocky View in the bike lane along the rocky coast. We stopped at John Denvers memorial plaque. It is close to where John’s experimental plane, low on fuel, crashed into the ocean in 1997. The plaque read:

JOHN DENVER

Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr

So welcome the wind and the wisdom she offers

Follow her summons when she calls again

In your heart and your spirit let the breezes surround you

Lift up your voice then and sing with the wind

We rode in a bike lane past Sunset Beach to Asilomar Beach View. We had lunch about 12:30PM at Bubba Gump’s in Cannery Row, while keeping an eye on our bikes. The view of the bay and the food was great while having a fun time.

The ride was 20.5 miles round trip, with stops for pictures and sight seeing. The ride was on paved trails and bike lanes. We were back at the start of the ride about 2:45PM. We were back in San Jose about 4:00PM.
