SIR HIKE TO HENRY COE STATE PARK FROG LAKE

Wednesday, April 23, 2025 12 Branch 32 hikers set out on a new exploration high in the Morgan Hill foothills. Our hike started out at 2,400 foot elevation and getting there alone was an experience as we traveled east of US 101 on E Dunne Ave, over and past Anderson Lake and another 10 miles of winding around and climbing up Coyote hills to the trailhead. Our hikers were: Ben Berman, John Cognetta, Pete Eppolito, Bob Jamello, Nick Jize, Fred Jones, Doug Krause, Dan Tam, Kelvin Thomas, Todd White, Jon Wiseman and Floyd Wolfe.

Temperatures were mid 50’s at our 10:15am departure and finished around 2 ½ hours later when complete. The skies were mostly cloudy at the start but 45 minutes later turned clear and sunny.  The hike traveled over very diverse, absolutely beautiful and gorgeous countryside. This time of year had purple, yellow and white wildflowers in bloom although small blooms they were.  The diversity of vast green grass pasturelands along with valleys and distant hills of pines, bay, and manzanita trees were surreal. After such a bountiful rainy season there were many sage and bay fragrances we easily sample from the vegetation in abundance.

All together we hiked 4 ½ miles over 2 ½ hours with a total elevation gain of 698 feet. Special features were: the beginning climb of 400 feet, (going clockwise on the trail).  There was a continuous descent of 600 feet to get to Frog Lake where we found some campers and Debbie, their friendly dog. We took about 15 minutes at Frog Lake to take in all the sights there.

This hike was the kind that refreshed your soul and connection with Mother Nature. It just lifted us up, a great escape to remember.

Afterward we drove into downtown Morgan Hill and had a delicious BBQ lunch at Trail Dust BBQ.
