10:30 AM

During World War II, the Richmond shipyards produced 747 ships, more than any other shipyard in the country.  To meet the demand for skilled labor, white men were hired to produce the ships to be built there.  However, there were not enough men available to fill the jobs needed, so women and minorities were recruited, hired and trained to fill key positions, a dramatic change from existing hiring practices at the time, and from war time publicity Rosie the Riveter was born.

The Museum honors those who contributed to the success of the shipyard, especially women and minorities.

In addition to touring the Museum, we will have the opportunity to meet and hear from one of the surviving Rosies, who will share with us her memories and thoughts about working at the Richmond Kaiser Shipyard in the 1940’s.  This day trip may be one of the most exciting this year.

We will meet in front of the visitor’s center at 10:30 AM and proceed to the Auditorium for an introductory film and presentation by one of the Rosie’s.  Following the presentation, you will have ample time to tour the museum.  Lunch will follow at a local restaurant.

There will be no charge for this visit.  The trip is open to all SIRs, their spouses/partners, friends, and relatives.  For the conversation with Rosie, the Museum requires a 15-person minimum and with the initial response received from the recent RoosterTales announcement, this one could fill up fast, so please let me know if you’d like to join us.
