Welcome to SIR Branch 101
November 2024 Big SIR, Dwight Lang
Summerized from the September/October Newsletter…
I am writing you from the ship San Spirito, as my wife and I are on the SIR Collette Croatia trip. We are currently docked at a Croatian island called Rab, after spending three days in Venice, the Istria peninsula of Croatia, and on the islands of Cres and Krk. We have good weather, except for a rainy day
in Venice, and have even gone swimming in the Adriatic Sea. I would encourage you all to look into the SIR trips set up by our travel coordinator Bill Britton; they are well done, educational and very enjoyable.
Our Little SIR, Bob Johnson, will be running the October 17th luncheon, and we will have a very interesting talk given by Brook Witherspoon on “Hiking Mount Whitney and Other Thoughts On Life”. Please attend, and I plan to see you at our November luncheon.
As of the September BEC meeting, Terry Tikalsky has agreed to be our Little Sir/VP in 2025. Congratulations to Terry and Good Wishes in this role!
Please save the date, Friday, December 6, 2024, for our Holiday Celebration Dinner at Asbury Methodist Fellowship Hall. It should be a lot of fun, so plan on attending. We looked at other facilities where we could hold our dinner, but even in August the preferable dates were not available elsewhere, and they were substantially more expensive.
I attended the SIR State annual meeting on September 24 in Lafayette. Proposed changes are being referred to working groups, whose consensus will be presented to the SIR State board. The State SIR voting members, all of the Big SIRs of each branch plus the state officers,
will then act on them. The State organization is asking for help in manning these boards, so if you can help out on them, please let me know. A key item is how to reach out and inform senior men who are interested in being active about all of the fun activities that we offer. All ideas are welcome.
Luncheon Pricing…
Pricing for our October Luncheon is still $32. Please see the September/October Newsletter for details on paying for the luncheon.
Yearly Branch Dues…
Note: With inflation taking a bite out of our usable funds, especially those with fixed retirement income, if you find it difficult to pay the yearly dues and/or the cost of the luncheon, please see me discreetly. We have funds to help. Also, if you need a ride to the luncheon contact, via email: SIR 101 BigSir, we can have someone pick you up.

SIR (formerly referred to as “Sons In Retirement”) is a nonprofit public benefit corporation for retired men. The purpose of SIR is to provide members with a variety of activities while renewing friendships and making new friends. Having fun is our goal. Starting in 2023, a small yearly fee has been required from branch members. This provides funding for special events such as a yearly picnic and holiday dinner. The only other requirement for membership is that you need to be able to attend 5 of 10 monthly luncheons, with some exceptions. From its inception in 1958 SIR has grown to over 10,000 members. Branch 101 in Livermore has about 132 active members.
Our Activities:
Hiking, Kayaking, Dining Out, Bocce are just a few of our activities. Branch 101 has over 16 Activities. What Activities might you be interested in? See the Current Newsletter link in the drop-down menu above. We are always open to trying new activities. We’ve heard suggestions like: Scrabble, Mexican Train (dice game), or even a board game night. If you are interested in any of these or have other ideas, please see me, Dwight Lang, or 2024 Little SIR, Bob Johnson.
