SIR Branch 5 Golf

SIR Branch 5 has, generally, about 75 golf members, although we average between 25 to 30 golfers at each golf game. To offer variety in our golf activities and at the same time to avoid excessive travel and expensive green fees, we schedule games once a week, usually on Thursday, at one of the local municipal courses in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and Milpitas. However, for golfers who would like something different, we also schedule once a year a golf tournament at Rancho Caņada (Carmel Valley) and Poppy Hills (Monterey Peninsula), plus twice a year trips to Carson City, Nevada, for some local golf games (wives may also play) and evenings at a local casino.

All SIR Branch 5 golfers are required to be members of the NCGA (Northern California Golf Association) ($20 per year), who, based upon scores submitted to them, determine the player's handicap for each golf game. Thus, golfers with high scores can compete with those with lower scores. In addition, after each golf game, scores are divided into Flights or Groups so that all golfers are competing and have an opportunity to win prizes (usually golf balls) with those of similar golf ability.
