Welcome to SIR Branch 101

May 2024 Big SIR, Dwight Lang

I hope you have been out and
enjoying the nice spring weather,
when we had it.

Mark your calendars for our annual
SIRs Picnic on June 20th; it should
be a lot of fun. We will be out on the
Asbury patio, which is very nicely
shaded.

We will have live music performed by Tim Gomes, a local singer
& guitarist. There will be some fun games, including a trivia game and
a bingo game. Wives and significant others are invited as well, so plan
on coming, you will enjoy it!

We continued to have very good attendance at our April luncheon with
76 people attending, including five guests. This level of attendance
allows us to keep the cost of the luncheon unchanged.

The April talk by author, Michael Barrington about the French resistance
during World War II was very informative. Our May Luncheon will be May
16th when Herbert Cole, the City of LivermoreEmergency Manager will
talk about emergency preparedness. (ED: from the May 2024 newsletter).

Luncheon Pricing

As you know, costs have been going up (even though inflation has slowed), including the cost of food. Our caterer has informed us that the cost of providing the substantial meal at our luncheons, will increase by $1.50, from $22 to $23.50 per meal. We are assessing the impact of this cost increase on the overall cost of the luncheon, and expect that we will need to increase the member’s luncheon cost by one-dollar starting with the August 2024 luncheon. The additional $.50 per meal cost increase could be covered by the Len Smith Fund. As we have higher attendance at our luncheons, the fixed costs are spread over more attendees. I will keep you informed of the possible cost increase.

Yearly Branch Dues

Over 70 of our members have paid their annual dues. Thank you for taking the responsible action so that we can cover our costs! If you have not paid your dues, please pay them now as they are past due. I hope you can get out and enjoy the spring like weather. Bring a friend along to show them how much fun we have! The mandatory dues allow us to be able to pay for our operating expenses. You can Zelle payment to SIR101treasurer@gmail.com, pay at the registration table at our March luncheon, or mail a check made out to “Sons in Retirement, Livermore Branch” to Roger Grimm at 3034 Chateau Way, Livermore 94550.

Note: With inflation taking a bite out of our usable funds, especially those with fixed retirement income, if you find it difficult to pay the $30 dues and/or the cost of the luncheon, please see me discreetly. We have funds to help. Also, if you need a ride to the luncheon contact SIR 101 BigSir, we can have someone pick you up.

SIR (formerly referred to as “Sons In Retirement”) is a nonprofit public benefit corporation for retired men. The purpose of SIR is to provide members with a variety of activities while renewing friendships and making new friends. Having fun is our goal. Starting in 2023, a small yearly fee has been required from branch members. This provides funding for special events such as a yearly picnic and holiday dinner. The only other requirement for membership is that you need to be able to attend 5 of 10 monthly luncheons, with some exceptions. From its inception in 1958 SIR has grown to over 10,000 members. Branch 101 in Livermore has about 145 members.
